Artist in the making...

So maybe I'm "quashing" his artistic expression, but is it so wrong that I want his art to match my living room?  (so kill me if I love turquoise and pink) :)

I wondered about this, but when I saw the proud look on Toby's face when I hung his beautiful painting front and center in our living room, I knew it hadn't "affected" him.

He loves that his painting looks like mommy's :)

So...there you have it....give them a real canvas (a la dollar store), a paintbrush, and a platter full of your "living-room-complementing" colours, and you'll be surprised what they might come up with!

My little Toby proudly painted me a beautiful pink flower (bottom right) and an equally lovely magenta tractor (top right) , with a brown and purple cow (top left) to top of all off. Every brush stroke was so deliberate and cute! He was really into it!

I couldn't happier!

(and yes...*sigh*, we ride bikes in the house)

He loves to tell everyone that "I painted that all by myself, and I'm a big boy and I'm three!"

We did the same thing for his playroom about a year and a half ago, and he loved it then too! I think he's just a lot more aware of the "proud" feeling now :) Definitely a fun little project, for anyone that's willing for a little mess! (tip: lay out a big black garbage bag on the floor and put the canvas/paints, etc on top. That way, it's really easy to clean up with one swoop)

  1. Adorable! I picked up a couple dollar-store canvases just last week with plans to do the exact same thing with my three year old. There were only two of the larger size left at the store, so I'm hoping to go back and get a third so I can put up a trio over the fireplace.

  7. I love it! My son's artwork hangs in our house too. He did a painting for his room and all of the artwork done in our master bedroom was done by him. Your little one did a masterful job!

Just yesterday I got around to framing one of my daughter's pieces of artowrk. Shes 6 and we're already seeing some amazing talent in her. She was so excited when she got home from school to see I had it framed and on display for all to see:)

  10. Good idea about providing living room friendly colours- how devious! I love framing my kids artwork and display it around the house. I have a huge space along the stairwell that I am slowly collecting their art in order to display my collection.

  12. Bravo- he did a fantastic job! We did the same thing with our daughter when she was 3. My hubby found a huge octagonal canvas and we gave her colors that went with our bedroom. It's hanging above our bed and we love it.
    So precious.

  13. I don't think you are squashing him...I used to give my girl options of something like six colors - in complimentary shades and tell them they could use three -otherwise everything would have been brown...

I still have many of the things they painted - it worked splendidly...

  15. This is such a heart-warming post...children's art on the wall (of the living room no less!), bikes in the house, the fact that you identified the objects in the painting for us, I love it all!

  16. Expressionist art at its finest, Tracey!! I think you should have Toby go all-out and paint you enough canvases to fill that whole wall with a gallery of his creations!! Love the punch of colour on the wall ;-)

Looking forward to meeting you on Saturday!!

  19. I think that is absolutely fabulous. The fact that you encouraged him to paint and then hung it front and center for him to see every day is certainly a confidence booster. NO wonder he feels proud! It is just beautiful and fits in perfectly with its surroundings. Who needs to pay top dollar for a painting when you have a budding artist at home. Blessings, Tammy
